This Friday we are following DaVinci’s Barber, theevolving inspiration storyboard of John Alanouf, a VERY busy stylist in CA. John juggles working at the uber-futuristic Shanghai salon, is artistic consultant for Davinés Haircare, blogger and founder of an independent artistic education team called The Netwerk.
Where do you get your hair inspiration?
Just about everywhere. Hairdressing isn’t just a job for me. It’s really more of an artistic perspective. I see the world, cultures, art, music, lifestyle, philosophy, characters and patterns through a hairdressing filter. The classic works of Vidal Sassoon and Toni&Guy are the foundation for my technique and aesthetic. My teammates at The Netwerk are also a huge factor in motivating me and helping me act on my ideas. And Tim Hartley, who had left Sassoon to become the Davinés global visionary artist took me on as his personal assistant for 5 years. That experience shaped me considerably.
What’s your current hair obsession?
Simplicity/minimalism in general. I prefer strong, deliberate shapes that glorify the natural hair and allow for an effortless look. Something that is, by nature, an extension of the person. I really believe in the old Sassoon slogan: “the cut is the style”. I lean to the blunt side of the artistic spectrum.
What are your top 3 hair products?
Dede Mist leave-in conditioner, Glam Power hairspray and Defining Gloss shine spray. All from Davinés Haircare.
Which stylists are your ones to watch and why?
Tim Hartley, Antoinette Beenders, Mark Hayes and Angelo Seminara off the top of me head. I feel like they all have such identifiable styles that I know it when I see it. They are super relevant masters of imagery and art direction in general.
